Add to your TBR pile with these recommendations from some of our amazing Deep Magic authors!
Have you heard that we have a Kickstarter underway? It’s true. Deep Magic Volume III is fully funded and currently working its way through its stretch goals. So, before it wraps up, we thought we’d introduce you to some of the authors writing stories for this brand new anthology, and let them tell you about what they’ve written and what other work of their’s you can check out while you wait for your copy.
The Tailor by Carrie Anne Noble
A young tailor travels the countryside by donkey trying to solve the faerie riddle he inherited, and ends up tasked with sewing a special wedding dress that will either bring him true love or end his life.
If you’re looking for more from Carrie Anne Noble she recommends checking out her newest novel, The Springborn.
They are both fairy tale-style stories of characters struggling to find their rightful places in a world touched by just a hint of magic.
The New Plan by JA Andrews
The New Plan, is related to my Aenigma Lights trilogy (specifically book 2, Mistlight). The two dwarf twins, who are the main characters of the Deep Magic story are also side characters in *The Aenigma Lights,* and they’re reader favorites.
I wanted to write an adventure all about them, instead of having them just be side characters who never get their own point of view.
The twins are generally good-natured trouble-makers who manage to end up with other people’s possessions very easily, and generally only look out for themselves — unless they get a particularly good deal in exchange for helping someone else.
Song and Storm by Jeanna Mason Stay
Breadcrumbs from the collection Unspun is a story of what happens to Gretel after she escapes from the witch in the woods. It’s dark and hard for her, and I think both these stories are about what happens when you have to make difficult decisions that you don’t really want to make. But at the same time, there’s light and peace and power in making those decisions.
The Modern Mystic by Maria V Snyder
Snyder says their story is inspired by their, “musing on what a modern-era mystic would use in place of a crystal ball.”
I believe Deep Magic readers would also enjoy my Archives of the Invisible Sword series. It’s a traditional fantasy story set in a desert world. Sand has buried their land, the water table has sunken almost beyond reach, and to be caught on the surface of their world at noon is a death sentence for the citizens of Koraha. To survive, they live in vast underground cities. In the first book, The Eyes of Tamburah, the main protagonist, Shyla, is tasked with finding lost artifacts… And they are stolen soon after they’re found. Accused of the theft, Shyla must navigate to the lowest depths of the city of Zirdai to find the Eyes and prove her innocence.
A Silent Song by Elijah Lewis
My story, A Silent Song, features young Fehlán, a boy who lives on the edge of the world with his grandparents, tending to sheep on an otherwise bleak and lonely moor. Each day, Fehlán and his grandfather sit where the world ends and the endless fog begins, listening for silence; a bizarre practice Fehlán joins to humor his grandfather. But when mysterious forces begin to intrude on his world, he learns there may be more to his grandfather—and himself—than he ever imagined.
While unrelated to their Deep Magic story they recommend their story The Peacemaker from the Change the World anthology.
In The Peacemaker, Tassilo stands alone in the world of demons. Once demonkind’s greatest warrior, now he has turned to the cultivation of a life of peace. Yet peacemaking is forbidden by the ruling demons, and Tassilo’s ideas are spreading…
Song of Dissonance by DK Holmberg
Song of Dissonance is set in the world of the Wayward Chronicles, where I wanted to explore the some of the deeper mythology of the fae and those who serve them.
The Echoing Siege by Jeff Wheeler
For my short story, I decided to write one set in a new world that will be coming out next summer with Oliver Heber Books. The series is called The Angel Sworn and I’m nearly done writing the first novel. I wanted to do a short story to give some background on the world and one of its controversial characters, a man who was imprisoned for defying the ruling class but is needed to help protect an island fortress when it is attacked unexpectedly.
While you’re waiting for the first book in The Angel Sworn series to come out you can take a look at Jeff’s Whispers from Mirrowen series.
The Misadventures of the Peacock Sapphire Un-Heist by KJ Dawson
For expert thief, Elara, stealing the artifact was the easy part. Finding out it’s legit cursed and putting it back is… well… much more difficult—especially with a useless fairy companion and a grumpy Hermes statue in tow!
Like a genius, I wrote this story outside my usual genre. Like, not in the same realm at all, literally! But, if you are a literary manager or a producer, I can adapt this short story into a script!
Having said that, for a high fantasy with bantering dwarves, check out The Poisoned Prince, a stand alone fairytale retelling.
A Whisper of Blue by Ken Liu
Ken recommends their novella, The Passing of the Dragon.
The Passing of the Dragon is also about how dragons can change reality.
The Knight’s Song by Allison Anderson
The Knight’s Song follows events that happen four years before The Cartographer’s War begins. We get to dive into the mind of our favorite siren-turned-spy, Amarissa Delmar, and see what she was up to before Penny Barclay ever discovered the rebellion in Eleusion.
Check out the first book in The Cartographer’s War series, The Spring Maiden, and the start of Penny’s adventure here:
Spring Break by Charlie N. Holmberg
I got the idea for Spring Break while on a walk, thinking about Sarah J. Maas and the growing popularity of not just romantasy, but fae-based romantasy novels. I wondered, what happens after the love story? And thus this short story was born.
Charlie recommends The Will and The Wilds, a standalone fantasy and a spellbinding story of truce and trickery.
And that’s a wrap, though there are even more authors included than what you see here. Are you excited yet? We know we are.
