Today we have Hazel Haas on the blog! She’s here for a Q&A to celebrate the release of A Lady’s Dangerous Secret, book 1 in the new Scandalous Secrets series.
Welcome! Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and what got you into writing?
Thank you! I never thought I would grow up to be an author, despite loving to read and create stories in my mind. As an adult with a successful career in an entirely different field, I realized something was missing but couldn’t pinpoint it. During COVID, it finally dawned upon me that I should try to write down the stories that still danced in my imagination. Once I did, my creativity was unleashed, and I found the missing piece to the puzzle.
Are there any books that have really influenced you as a writer? What inspired this book in particular?
Part of the inspiration for “A Lady’s Dangerous Secret” began after I reread Jane Austen’s novels. I loved her wittiness and her books’ setting in the Regency era. As I was thinking of the story for my Regency romance novel, I knew I wanted to add mystery and intrigue to the plot. One of the authors who excels at this mix is Kerrigan Byrne in her Victorian Rebel series. I also greatly admire Diana Gabaldon for her dedication to historical detail, and her crossover from scientist to fiction author.
What do you enjoy most about writing historical romance?
I love that there is a roller coaster of emotions to reach the happily ever after. For me, the more twists and turns in a plot, the better. I enjoy feeling uncertain throughout the book that the story will truly have a happy ending.
What is your favorite aspect about the dynamic between Lady Charlotte and Captain James?
Charlotte grew up as the forgotten fifth child of her family and James grew up under his tyrannical uncle’s thumb, which caused each of them to have insecurities. My favorite aspect of the dynamic between them is that they make the other person feel seen. And I can’t forget their banter. They have some lively exchanges.
Can you tell us about your writing space? Where do you do most of your writing?
The outdoors! I love going for walks in the woods and dictating my stories. At home, my desk is in front of a large window, which is perfect for daydreaming or productivity depending on the day.
What helps you when you have writers block?
Being outside and finding a way to let my mind wander.
What are some things you are really enjoying right now? Books, TV, foods, etc.?
Given my current focus on Regency romance, I really enjoy The Country House Podcast. The hosts take a deep dive into country houses in the UK and all over the world. It makes me even more excited to continue writing in this time period.

James detests the ton, but he is stuck in London seeking the widow who murdered his man of business. The only way his sole aristocratic friend will aid him is if he attends the events of the Season. Much to his dismay, one woman continues to catch his eye-Lady Charlotte Tipton.
Danger follows Charlotte, and James always seems to be there at just the right time. Plus, an undeniable attraction has blossomed between them. Given the choice between practicality and her heart, one matter remains: How will Charlotte save herself?
