Today we have a real treat for you: a Character Interview by author V.I. Davis in honor of the release of Henry’s Salvation, the final book in her Crimson and Shadows series.
After the night had descended on Santoria, Henry Duval met with Gralan Stone, who was selling his cottage by the Starling Sea.
G (fumbling with the keys): I was surprised you wanted to meet so late in the evening. The cottage looks beautiful during the day. Lots of natural light. And the view from the patio is gorgeous.
H: I’m sure it is. I traveled from New Haven and couldn’t get here until tonight. Are you looking to sell the house right away?
G (opening the front door and walking inside): Here we are! Yes, looking to sell right away. We have already moved to another house. We needed a bigger place, you see, with two little ones and another one on the way. Are you looking to buy for just you, or is there a beautiful lady in your life?
H (smiling softly): There is. Her name is Sophie. The house is a surprise for her. She loves being by the water.
G: Then she will love this place. How did you two meet?
H: Well, she tried to stab me.
G (shocked): What?!
H (chuckling): Nothing. The circumstances under which we met were not ideal. She didn’t like me much at first.
G: I see. Women are capricious creatures. How did you manage to get in her good graces?
H: It wasn’t easy. Even after I saved her life more than once, she was still plotting to kill me.
G (shocked): What?!
H (chuckling): Nothing. Her heart was always true, ablaze with a thirst for justice. I was drawn to that flame. I knew I wouldn’t give up until I had made her mine.
G: Well, it sounds like you’ve succeeded. What do you think about the house?
H: I think it’s perfect! We don’t need much.
G: The cottage is small but cozy. Perfect for a couple. And you have a spare room for visitors.
H: Actually, I think I will turn that room into a library for Sophie. She loves to read.
G: A man with a plan. I like it! Are we ready to make a deal?
H (clasping Gralan’s shoulder and holding his gaze): We are. I will pay the full asking price. My generosity will be the only distinctive thing you will remember about me. You will forget the conversation we had tonight and will just know that you sold the house to a nice young couple.
G (glassy-eyed and dazed): Of course. We have an agreement.
